The independent panel which was appointed to conduct a preliminary assessment of the African Transformation Monevement (ATM) Section 89 motion against President Cyril Ramaphosa will hand over its report on Wednesday.
The independent panel was established to determine whether or not the president’s conduct warrants his impeachment.
Panel chair Retired Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo is set to hand the report over to the speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, on Wednesday.
This a week after requesting an extension “due to the amount of work still to be done”.
In a statement of Monday, the panel announced it would finally be able to hand over its report on whether Ramaphosa has a case to answer regarding the burglary at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo in February 2020.
The move came after former spy boss Arthur Fraser laid a criminal charge against Ramaphosa nd former head of the Presidential Protection Unit, Wally Rhoode, for allegedly kidnapping and torturing five men and a woman to reveal information on where they had hidden millions in foreign currency stolen from the president’s farm.
Fraser named Imanuwela David, Erriki Shikongo, Petrus Muhekeni, Shaumbwako and Petrus Afrikaner as the alleged perpetrators of the heist.
The former spy boss who is known to be a close ally of former president Jacob Zuma also alleged that people suspected of being involved were questioned in an off-book operation.
He claimed that immediately after the incident, Rhoode, formed a team of former police officers and serving members of crime intelligence to hunt down the suspects all the way to Namibia.
The establishment of the panel comes after Mapisa-Nqakula accepted a request by the ATM for a Section 89 inquiry to be established against Ramaphosa.
If the panel recommends to parliament that Ramaphosa has a case to answer, their recommendation will be put to a vote in the National Assembly, which will reportedly take place next Tuesday.
