SASSA currently has a variety of grants which are open to South Africans. However, the Social Relief Distress Grant is most applicable to the majority who have no means or source of income and will be available until March 2023.
Since the coronavirus pandemic hit, the government has implemented the Social Relief Distress Grant. To qualify, you need to be between 18 and 60 years old to qualify but how does it work?
Who qualifies for the SASSA Grant?
Like many grants, the SASSA Grant has some criteria that you would have to meet. In order to be considered for the grant, you need to be aged between the ages of 18 and 60. You would also need to have no source of income to qualify for the SRD R350 Grant. The grant is open to South Africans, Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Special Permit holders.
How do I apply?
To apply for the Social Relief Distress Grant, you can choose a channel that is the easiest for you. SASSA currently has three ways in which you can apply for the grant. You can apply online on the SRD website or the SASSA chatbot on their official SASSA website. There is also an additional channel through Whatsapp on the number 082 046 8556.
What do I need to do to apply?
To apply for the SRD R350 Grant, you do not need to upload any documentation. All you need to submit are your phone number, your identification number, your banking details, and your physical address.
Online status and appeal applications
In order to check your online status, be sure to have your South African ID number and phone number on hand. If your application was rejected, you can appeal this decision with Social Development. It’s important to note that this is only applicable to applications declined from the month of April 2022. Be sure to check the payment dates for the months of January to March 2023.

Changing your details
If for any reason your personal details have changed, you will be able to change your contact details. Whether it be your name and surname, your email, your phone number, or your banking details, you can update it.
To change your banking details, you will need to fill out the online form with your ID number and your application ID.
