Eight people have been killed in a horrific crash on the N2 Highway outside Makhanda in the Eastern Cape. The road accident happened on Friday evening, 20 May 2022.It is alleged that an Opel Corsa Lite carrying six occupants collided with a Toyota Quantum with two men inside.
Seven people were declared dead on the scene, while another passenger succumbed to his injures in hospital. Unathi Binqose, the Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson said they are investigating a case of negligent driving and recklessness.
“Head-on collision in particular, these are the collision that tell a story of one reckless driver who has dragged an innocent driver into an accident that has absolutely nothing to do with him or her. Here today we are talking about eight people who were involved in an accident just outside Makhanda and unfortunately all those eight people who were involved in that crash have all perished,” Binqose said.
In a separate incident, another motor vehicle accident occurred in the Eastern Cape just a day before, claiming the lives of four people. The crash involved a car and a bakkie on the N2 road between Makhanda and Peddie.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, all the occupants who were in the car died, two women and a 3-year-old child died, while a passenger in the bakkie also died in the fatal crash.
“A Polo VW Vivo with three occupants, two females and a 3-year-old boy, (all deceased) from Grahamstown a Toyota LDT with 6 occupants travelling from Peddie direction, all males alleged from a local farm collided head on. All three from the Polo died including a passenger from the bakkie perished on the scene,” the department said.
