A gunman has shot dead three people and wounded four others at a shopping mall in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen. The shooting unfolded on Sunday at multiple locations inside Field’s, a shopping centre in the Danish capital.
At a press conference on Monday morning, Soren Thomassen, the Copenhagen head of police said the victims include a man in his 40’s and two young people.
A 22-year-old Danish man was arrested after the shooting and is the only suspect currently in custody, but the motive was not clear. He had mental health issues but there was no indication of a terror motive, said Thomassen.
“We are convinced that the 22-year-old suspect arrested was the shooter, he was carrying a rifle and ammunition. The investigators believe the suspect was not working with others, but that until they are absolutely certain they will not rule it out,” said Thomassen.
Police arrested the suspect thirteen minutes after receiving the first emergency call about the shooting, said Thomassen.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Denmark had suffered a very cruel attack and she wanted to encourage Danes to stand together and support each other in this difficult time. “Our beautiful and usually so safe capital was changed in a split second,” she said.
Police confirmed they were investigating videos posted online which showed the alleged suspect with weapons pointing a gun at his head.
