The suspect in a mass shooting at a parade that left six people dead and sent two dozen more people to hospital, was arrested near Lake Forest, Illinois, authorities said during a news conference on Monday night.
The shooting in Highland Park, about 25 miles North of Chicago, began shortly after 10am CT as parade-goers participated and walked along Central Avenue. The suspect allegedly used a ladder attached to the building on a wall in an ally to get on top of the roof, said Christopher Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
The suspect identified as Robert E. Crimo lll, was spotted by a North Chicago officer who attempted a traffic stop. Crime tried to escape, and a police chase ensued, and he was eventually stopped and taken into custody.
He was arrested and taken into custody with nobody else being injured and will be transferred to the police department in Highland Park, where the deadly shooting occurred on Monday.
The authorities in Highland Park said they had recovered a high-powered rifle after the mass shooting during the country’s Fourth of July parade. The incidents were the state’s third mass shooting incident since Friday.
The attack was the largest and highest-profile shooting, but was not the only one, over the holiday weekend. This was the second mass shooting incident in the Chicago region alone on Monday. Less than 12 hours earlier, five people were injured in a shooting on Chicago’s South Side.
Earlier, as law enforcement searched for Crimo, police has labelled him as “a person of interest” and the FBI said, “He is being sought for his alleged involvement in the shooting of multiple individuals at an Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, Illinois.”
