A gunman killed at least four people on Wednesday at a hospital campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma, police said, the latest of a series of mass shootings in the United States. The gunman also died, apparently from a self-inflicted wound, Tulsa’s deputy police chief Eric Dalgleish told reports outside the St Francis Hospital.
It was unclear what prompted the deadly shooting. However, the unidentified gunman fired both a handgun and a rifle during the attack, Dalgleish said. Police responded to the call three minutes after dispatchers received the report and made contact with the suspect one minute later, authorities said.
Dalgleish said the police were trying to determine the man’s identity, but said we was aged between 35 and 40.
In a statement, the governor of Oklahoma called the killings a “senseless act of violence and hatred” and thanked first responders for their “quick and brave actions”.
“I have offered Mayor GT Bynum any state resources that may be needed, and I ask all Oklahomans to come together in support of the Saint Francis health system community,” said Kevin Stitt.
The deadly shooting comes eight days after the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old man. Just days before, a gunman in Buffalo, New York, was arrested for the alleged murder of 10 people at a supermarket. On Wednesday the shooter was charged with domestic terrorism and murder.
