The Gauteng education department is investigating alleged homophobic comments from a Soweto school teacher which led grade 9 pupil committing suicide.
The department confirmed that a PJ Simelane school pupil committed suicide this week after he was allegedly mocked over his sexuality. It is alleged that the teacher mocked the student’s sexuality in front of the whole class.
The incident during a speech presentation session. The boy who identified himself as gay became targeted by the teacher during the presentation. The learner decided not to go back to school and resorted to committing suicide.
The department confirmed that they met with the school and the family of the child after the incident occurred and an investigation into the matter is still ongoing. A psychosocial unit has also been deployed to the school for learners and teachers who are traumatised by the passing of the leaner.
Steve Mabona, the department’s spokesperson said a thorough investigation is now in full swing to find out what happened.
“There are allegations which we are ready to continue to investigate as a department. We will make sure we investigate those allegations and report at a later stage on the outcome thereof.”
