George floods have rendered the Western Cape city inoperable on Monday.
George floods: Road closures for Monday 22 November 2021
The George Local Municipality issued a statement urging “people to stay at home if they can.”
Torrential rainfall caused heavy flooding in most parts of the city, forcing road closures and hampering service delivery.
According to the municipality, motorists who will brave the weather must, at all cost, avoid:
- Langenhoven Street;
- Hope Street;
- St. Mary Street;
- R102 Old Airport Road;
- Fiegland Street, Borchards;
- Merriman Street closed from Laing Street to Union; and
- Saasveld Road/Madiba Drive (closed entirely).
Update on George municipal services
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) categorised the George floods as a level 2 warning. The torrential conditions are expected to last until Tuesday 23 November 2021.
At level 2, the following impact can be expected:
- Localised flooding/flash flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements
- Flooding of roads may occur which can affect major routes contributing to longer travel times together with reduced visibility and slippery roads can also cause minor vehicle accidents.
- Isolated events of lightning can contribute to localised service disruption due to power surges and outages.
Here are the latest updates on disrupted municipal services, recorded on Monday at approximately 09:22:
Electricity
Power outages were reported in some areas. The municipality expects technicians to attend to the outages when the weather improves.
Traffic
The George Municipality Drivers Licence Testing Centre is closed due to a power outage. However, the motor vehicle registration offices in Hibernia Street are open.
