As the cold front makes its way to Gauteng, residents are encouraged to get those blankets out and drink warms liquids.
Gauteng weather warned residents to brace themselves for freezing temperatures across the province on Sunday evening. According to the weather service, temperatures are expected to drop significantly on Sunday evening.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of significant drop in temperatures as well as snow in several parts of the country.
Freezing temperatures have been forecast for the evening in reaching as low as zero degrees Celsius “Alert: freezing over Southern Gauteng overnight due to cold front.”
Gauteng weather tweeted that the temperatures will be follows:
- Johannesburg at 1 degree Celsius
- Pretoria at 3 degrees Celsius
- Vereeniging at 0 degree Celsius
On Friday SAWS issued a yellow level 2 warning for strong winds between Saldanha Bay Plettenberg from Saturday all the way through to Sunday evening. The cold conditions reached the Sneeuberg and Winterberg in the Eastern Cape by Saturday.
Snowfall was confirmed in the Matroos mountain range in the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to the weather service, this would lead to damage of infrastructure and difficulty to navigate around the sea.
Meanwhile the City of Johannesburg Management Services said it will be on standby as the cold front is expected to hit various cities in Gauteng.
Robert Mulaudzi the spokesperson said EMS is concerned about the significant drop in temperatures as the cold front hits Gauteng.
“We remain on high alert, we just want to urge all our residents out there to continue to look after all heating devices as they try to warm themselves and make sure they don’t leave them unattended so that we can be able to prevent fire incidents,” said Mulaudzi.
