During an interview on Cliff’s show with DA leader John Steenhuisen and One South Africa Movement member Mudzuli Rakhivahne, one of the topics that were discussed included the commotion and removal of DA posters in Phoenix, Durban.
The posters claimed that the ANC party branded the Indian community as racist, while the DA celebrated them as heroes. The poster read: “The ANC called you racists” and “The DA calls you heroes”.
This discussion led to Cliff claiming race was “at the bottom of the list” for many South Africans.
Rakhivhane replied: “They obviously don’t experience the type of racism I experience on a daily basis.”
This was followed by a response from Cliff, saying her personal experience was “completely anecdotal” and “unimportant”.
Nando’s support freedom of speech
The comments made by Cliff naturally triggered outrage and shortly after the incident, Nando’s tweeted that they support “the right to freedom of speech”.
In a statement released over the weekend, the popular franchise announced that they will be pulling the sponsorship with immediate effect.
The company called the incident “highly disappointing” and “at odds with the reasons that we originally entered into our sponsorship of The Burning Platform“.
