Limpopo police have arrested four suspects allegedly responsible for the murder of two ANC Mogalakwena Councillors- Valtyne Kekana, 54, and Ralph Kanyane, 32- in 2019.
The four suspects were arrested in separate locations in the early hours of Tuesday. The police managed to track the suspects down in Sekgakgapeng, Moshate, Tshamahansi and Mokopane town. Brigadier Motlalefa Mojapelo, the police spokesperson said on 23 July 2019 Kanyane and Kekana were sitting in a motor vehicle when armed men approached them and fired shots at them at close range before fleeing the scene. Both victims were declared dead on the scene.
Kekana was chairperson of the municipal public accounts committee in Mogalakwena municipality, and Kanyane was the party’s branch secretary in the region. Donald Selamolela, the party’s provincial spokesperson at the time of the incident hinted that the murder of the two councillors may be politically motivated.
In October 2019, the Limpopo police offered a reward of R250 000 to anyone with credible information that could lead to the murder suspects and help put them behind bars for the murder of ANC councillors . According to Limpopo police, a high-level investigative team led by the deputy provincial commissioner Major-General Samuel Manala, who was responsible for crime detection, was appointed to probe the murders.
The four suspects, aged between 40 and 51 years of age are expected to appear at the Mokopane Magistrates Court on Wednesday. They face two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
