A week after 16 people who shot dead at a tavern in Orlando East, Soweto, four other people have been reportedly shot dead and two others injured in Lenasia, Gauteng on Saturday night.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela confirmed that two more people were injured in the shooting in Thembelihle informal settlement, Lenasia. Mawla said this was another horrific crime scene. From premiliminary investigations it appeared that the victims were shot while they were sitting around a fire.
“Two died in a corner, another person died by the street, the fourth body we are told is in another block. We don’t know how it happened, whether that person was part f this group,” Mawela said.
He added that the fourth victim may have been found by the assailants while they were moving away from the crime scene. “As the investigations continue, we will be able to link the three bodies and the fourth one. We were also informed that there were two people who were seated with the two who died on scene. They were also injured and rushed to hospital,” Mawela added.
The two people injured in the shooting were taken to hospital. Investigations are underway to establish the motive for the shooting. Mawela said their relationship with the community of Lenasia is a brick wall as the community members refuse to say a word on what they have seen.
He said Gauteng premier David Makhura was at the scene.
