Four cash-in-transit robbers have been shot dead near Soweto during a high-speed chase with the police. The incident happened along Nasrec road on Friday, 12 August.
In a statement, the South African Police Services (SAPS) revealed that the shootout ensued following a cash-in-transit robbery along Nasrec Road near Soweto.
It is reported that the driver of cash-in-transit vehicle was driving with a crew member on Nasrec road near Soweto. As they were driving, they suddenly came under fire from the suspects.
Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police spokesperson said the driver managed to drive until the vehicle came to a standstill on Juskei Road.
“The suspects allegedly robbed the security guards off their cellphones and one firearm before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money,” Netshiunda said.
“The Johannesburg flying squad members received a complaint about a cash-in-transit in progress and swiftly responded. The officers spotted a white BMW with four occupants and a green Nissan Navara also with four occupants and a white Toyota Fortuner with three occupants.
“The suspects allegedly shot at the police and a shootout ensued. Four suspects were shot and declared dead at the scene,” Netshiunda added.
A police officer sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital to receive medical care.
Police have urged anyone with information that can help lead to the other suspects to contact their nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111, or inform the police anonymously through the MySAPS App.
