On Tuesday evening 12 April, Eskom announced that loadshedding will have to continue for the rest of the week.
As of now, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented from 12 to 14 April, from 17:00 to 05:00 the next morning.
Eskom struggles with delays
The power utility was hoping to have more capacity available by Wednesday, however, due to previous breakdowns and delays in getting the serviced units back on the grid, it is necessary to extend stage 2.
There are still four generating units at Camden Power Station that are out of order as well as two units at Tutuka Power Station.
And this morning, another unit tripped at Lethabo Power Station but has returned to service in the evening. However, the system is still under strain as the unit takes time to reach full production.
A dark Easter may await South Africa
Eskom has furthermore warned customers, that in the case of “further deterioration” in generation capacity, further loadshedding may be required. And if more periods of loadshedding need to be implemented, chances are that it won’t stay at stage 2.
At this stage, there is 15 300 MW of capacity that are unavailable due to breakdowns.
