After a scam was making the rounds on social media, the party took to Twitter for damage control. The scam stated that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will be giving away R500 000. However, this is not true.
EFF’s money giveaway scam
The scam poster was made using the party’s Manifesto Launch announcement. It stated that the giveaway will be taking place in Marshalltown, Johannesburg, on the 26th of September.
However, the poster fails to mention how to enter the giveaway, or why the party decided to give away R500 000. It simply states that it is an “Economic Freedom Giveaway”.
“Fake news” can’t stop them
The political party made a clear announcement stating that the scam is in no way affiliated with any EFF structures in SA.
The party also encouraged their supporters to report any fake news or accounts.
Even with fake news making the rounds, the EFF still feels confident regarding the upcoming Local Government Elections:
“No fake news against us can stop us from victory in the 2021 Local Government Elections.”
The EFF has “no funds to declare”
The R500 000 giveaway would definitely have raised suspicion as the EFF did not declare its funding sources to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) earlier this month.
EFF leader, Julius Malema, said that they did not receive any donations above R100 000 between April and June this year. He stated that they had “nothing to declare, they’re called donations”.
Malema also added that the party “survived through the money of Parliament, through the IEC money and through party levies”.
While the EFF is staying afloat with the levies received from registered members, Malema insisted that “there’s nothing else that came into the EFF coffers that is more than R100 000”.
