It was a deadly weekend in Cape Town as another mass shooting occurred in Khayelitsha claimed six lives, a shooting at Sumerset hospital killed three and another life was claimed in Khayelitsha from a jealous partner. Ten lives were claimed including an on-duty police officer.
According to Thembisile Patekile, the Provincial police commissioner, the first incident occurred at the Sumerset Hospital on Saturday. According to the Western Cape police, Constable Donay Phillips, a Sea Point South Africa Police Service (SAPS) officer was guarding an injured man he had taken to hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that a scuffle broke out between an ex-police officer and officer Phillips at the hospital and officer Phillips was overpowered by the large ex police officer and was shot dead in the incident. Two patients were also shot and killed by the ex-police officer. The suspect was arrested and will be making an appearance in court Tuesday morning.
On Sunday evening police were called to Site C in Khayelitsha where a woman was found dead on the street. The woman was stabbed and was certified dead on the scene by paramedics. The suspect is believed to be the boyfriend and is wanted for questioning over the murder of the woman.
Patekile said just an hour after the discovery of the woman, a few metres away at the corner of Idada and Maphongwana Avenue, five people were found dead in the street and the sixth person was still conscious when the police arrived was declared dead on arrival at the Khayelitsha hospital. This is the third mass deadly shooting since March in Khayelitsha.
