A police constable who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend at Tembisa Hospital has been granted R5000 bail. On Wednesday 20 July the alleged murderer was granted bail after he appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.
Suspended constable Lucky Mudau aged 31, allegedly shot and killed his then girlfriend Lebo Monene in the hospital’s parking lot on the morning of 9 February. The Tembisa nurse alleged killer is a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair after turning the gun on himself.
He attempted to end his life after he killed his girlfriend Monene who was an assistant nurse at Tembisa hospital. Mudau was confined to a wheelchair when he attended the court hearing for bail application.
The state did not oppose bail, stating that his condition was very unique, and it was not equipped to accommodate him. The court case was attended and supported by a number of civil rights movements and family members of the deceased. The hope was for Mudau to be denied bail.
Outside court, Phindi Mjonondwane, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson said evidence presented in court showed the existence of exceptional circumstances which allowed Mudau to be released on bail.
Mjonondwane added that it was important to understand that every case should be treated according to its merits.
“These are serious charges, and he will be given an opportunity to stand trial and disprove the evidence that the State will bring forth,” she said.
