Alexandra High School pupils are in trouble after chaos broke out during Spring Day celebrations which resulted in classes being disrupted on Thursday.
In the video making rounds on social media, students can be seen on corridors outside of classes throwing chairs on the floor. A cloud of smoke can be seen while the learners are busy throwing chairs on the floor. On the floor are rubbish bins which have been also thrown on the floor leaving garbage all over the place.
Steve Mabona, the Gauteng Education spokesperson, said the department confirmed the incident that took place at Alexandra High.
“We can confirm that learners who were purported to be celebrating Spring Day on the 1st of September 2022 caused havoc at Alex High.”
Mabona said furniture was damaged, water was wasted, and learners interfered with the fire extinguisher at the school.
“It is quite barbaric, which we witnessed on the video footage on what was happening at the school. We just want to call upon parents to assist us in installing discipline in children because they need to understand you cannot damage anything at your school, and you expect that to be fixed,” Steve Mabona.
He said the chaotic celebrations were “against the code of conduct due to the disruption of schooling”. The alleged instigators of the celebrations would go through a disciplinary process, and a disciplinary committee would determine the outcome, Mabona said.
“Such ill-discipline will not be tolerated in our schools,” he added.
