The young graduate, Dumisani Ngobese, touched the hearts of many South Africans as he could not hold back the tears as his name was called on stage at the joyous graduation ceremony at the University’s Durban Westville Campus. His story left people in tears when he attended the event dressed in black casual clothing because he could not afford a suit.
Among those who were moved is Durban businessman, the owner of Calvin and Family Groups Companies, Calvin Mathibeli. On Saturday, UKZN released a statement which said Mathibeli was willing to offer Dumisani Ngobese a permanent job and also pay for his study fees at the university.
In a statement, Mathibeli said: “I was so moved by his story because of his resilience, but also because of the similarities that we have in terms of background. I spoke to him yesterday and I was very moved by his story.
“Ngobese’s story resonated with my own experiences. I was raised by my grandmother in a big family, but our resilience made us who we are. I want to ensure that Ngobese is able to earn a living, so that he can contribute to his family. All I need from him is to respect the job.”
