A 22-year-old man was shot and killed and his 26-year old girlfriend was injured in an attempted rape incident by a lone gunman in Cornubia, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday morning.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were called to the scene by members of the South African Police Service at approximately 04:21 requesting medical assistance. On arrival, medics examined an unresponsive male who was lying on the side of the road. He sustained a single gunshot wound to his head and was declared dead on the scene.
The 26-year-old girlfriend was treated for a gunshot wound on her left buttock before an ambulance took her to hospital to receive medical treatment. According to Rusa, the couple was attacked by a lone gunman as they were walking home from a local tavern. The man began shooting at the couple after allegedly trying to rape the girlfriend.
“The suspect demanded that the female follow him into the dense bush where she believed that he intended to rape her. She attempted to flee while her boyfriend fought off their attacker. During the scuffle, shots were fired killing the male victim and injuring the female,” Rusa said in a statement.
The suspect fled into the dense bushes after the shooting.
