A man was killed after and angry mob attacked the vehicle three men were driving in and set then set the car alight in Grassy Park, Cape Town on Tuesday morning at around 11am, said the Western Cape police. Local residents claim the man was involved in kidnapping children, but authorities could not conform this.
According to Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, the police spokesperson, three men were travelling in vehicle when the mob attacked the car and set it alight. Two men were able to escape and flee the scene, but the third suspect died on the scene.
Swartbooi said police responded to the scene where the mob attack took place near the M5 highway. He said: “Upon arrival at the scene, [officers] found a Toyota Avanza in flames and the body of an unknown man who succumbed… as a result of injuries sustained due to the fire.”
The Grassy Park police have opened a murder case for investigation. “The suspects are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is unknown,” Swartbooi said.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Community leader Rashaad Allen, who was at the scene said community member have had enough of crime. “I have spoken to a number of residents and youth, and they all feel what happened was 100% the right thing to do. A lot of people I spoke to helped chase these men.
“I met with three grandmothers who all stated if we (as a community) are not going to make an example, people will not take us seriously,” Allen said.
