Actress Amber Heard settles defamation lawsuit
After months of deliberation, Amber Heard has decided to leave the outcome of her defamation lawsuit as it is. The actress previously shared that she will appeal the outcome after it was found that she in fact defamed Johnny Depp.
Amber Heard was previously required to pay Johnny Depp over 5 million in damages. This comes after the actor claimed he had lost countless job offers. As a result of an op-ed, the actress wrote for the Washing Post.
Taking to her Instagram recently, Amber Heard shared that she will now settle her lawsuit with Johnny Depp but emphasized the fact that “this is not an act of concession”. The actress further that the legal system had failed her after she felt brave enough to share her story and obtain justice.
She shared, “After a great deal of deliberation, I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.”
“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so, my life as I knew it was destroyed.” She continued, “I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”
The potential of a re-trial axed out
As a result, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have settled the defamation lawsuit, which took place earlier this year. The actress will now settle the lawsuit by paying Johnny Depp $1 million.
The actor was previously required to pay Amber Heard a total of $2 million in the defamation lawsuit. In her lengthy post, Heard noted that she made this decision after she “lost faith in the American Legal system.”
While the actress wanted to appeal the outcome earlier this year, Amber Heard shared that the evidence presented in court would have to be presented again and that she simply cannot go through all the humiliation again.
In her closing statement, Amber Heard thanked her legal team and most importantly her supporters.
“Any survivor knows that the ability to tell their story often feels like the only relief, and I cannot find enough words to tell you the hope your belief in me inspires. Not just for me but for all of you.”
