A 25-year-old Mercedes Benz driver was arrested for allegedly driving way past the speed limit on the Limpopo N1 Highway near Mookgopong on Wednesday afternoon, 18 May. The suspect clocked almost double the appropriate speed limit and was detained at the Naboomspruit police station.
Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, the Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, condemned the “gross negligence and reckless driving by the suspect who clocked 234km per hour on the N1 while driving a Mercedes Benz.
Lerule-Ramakhanya said most of the serious car accidents which result in fatalities are caused by speed, recklessness and negligent driving. She commended the officers who were able to apprehend the Mercedes Benz driver saying that this will send a strong message to those who are negligent on the roads and will also deter others from thinking of speeding.
“I am disappointed, and I want to condemn the behaviour of a young person who was caught around Mookgopong area doing a speed of 234km/h. We are not going to tolerate anyone who does not abide by the laws and our speed limits on the roads,” said the MEC.
“I want to say to other young people who have cars and who are going to drive on the N1, to be responsible and join us in making sure that you comply, you follow the regulations but we also want to send a warning that we will arrest, detain and make sure that you are answerable for your acts, every time you break the law,”Lerule -Ramakhanya said.
