The National Freedom Party (NFP) is taking its disgruntlement with the 2021 election results to court in a bid to stop Thursday evening’s announcement.
NFP heads to court to halt 2021 election results
As reported by EWN, the fierce opposition to the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) cites allegations of unfairness in vote counting, specifically in eDumbe, where it has enjoyed immense growth in support.
According to the NFP, there has been a misrepresentation in the total wards the party won in the province. From its tally, seven wards were awarded to the party but as vote counting nears completion in KZN at 99.5%, the total wards allocated to the NFP is six, according to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
From what we understand, the party did raise the issue with the IEC on Wednesday. However, talks broke down and the NFP’s last resort was to approach the Pietermaritzburg High Court to interdict the results announcement scheduled to take place at 18:00 on Thursday evening.
Vote counting, at the time this article was published, was at 98.5% with the remaining votes from every province, except Free State, just about tallied up and audited.
