Fourteen people were killed in a mass shooting incident at a Soweto tavern just after midnight. 10 other people were injured at the Nomzamo Tavern in Orlando, with three other people reported to be in critical condition.
According to reports the, the incident at Nomzamo Tavern in Orlando happened in the early hours of Sunday, 10 July.
“Yes, I can confirm that the incident did happen and it happened around 12:30am this morning,” Elias Mawela, the Gauteng Police Commissioner said.
“Primary investigations suggest the people were enjoying themselves in the tavern. They just came and shot at them randomly,” Mawela said.
Mawela said the motive for the deadly shooting is unknown and detectives are on the scene to investigate the matter.
“The age range is just an estimation from my detectives to say they are between 19 and 39 years.”
The Soweto incident comes after weeks after 21 teenagers died at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, East London. The cause of death is still under investigation, and it is alleged that they could have died from a poisonous gas coming from the generator coming from the tavern.
The funeral of the 21 teenagers was held on Wednesday this week and President Cyril Ramaphosa said he received requests to increase the age restriction for alcohol consumption to 21.
