The Department of Energy confirmed that from Wednesday 7 October, these price changes will take effect:

• Petrol 95: decrease of 32 cents per litre
• Petrol 93: decrease of 23 cents per litre
• Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 90 cents per litre
• Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 93 cents per litre
• Illuminating paraffin: decrease of 76 cents per litre

How petrol price adjustments are calculated in South Africa

At periods of review, the price of crude oil may see fluctuating changes due to a number of factors, including the commodity’s position in the stock market. South Africa also purchases refined petrol and the movements of crude oil in the global market, matched with the US dollar exchange rate, dictate how much motorists will pay at the pumps.

Petrol prices have dropped for the second month in a row and according to the Automobile Association (AA), positive signs can be drawn from this trend but motorists should still be wary of unforeseen disruptions to the price downturn.

“It is too early to tell whether the spikes in both (rand and international prices) were a blip or the start of a more sustained reversal, but motorists should continue to be wary given the ongoing instability in both local and global economies,” the AA noted in a statement.
