The anticipation is building as the GR Cup, presented by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa, prepares to descend upon the renowned Killarney International Raceway for an exhilarating weekend of motorsport action. As Round 6 of the 2023 GR Cup driven by Netstar approaches, five top South African motoring writers are set to do battle once again, from behind the wheels of their exhilarating Toyota GR86 race cars.
The excitement is palpable as the familiar faces of Mark Jones (Citizen), Denis Droppa (TimesLIVE), Setshaba Mashigo (ASAMM), Chad Luckhoff (Auto Trader) and Brendon Staniforth (Maroela Media) gear up for another electrifying showdown on the track. The iconic Killarney circuit, known for its challenging layout and rich racing heritage, promises to provide a fitting backdrop for this high-octane event.
Weather conditions are expected to be cool but dry, creating ideal racing conditions for both Friday’s practice sessions and Saturday’s main events. The motoring writers will have the opportunity to fully explore the capabilities of their Toyota GR86 machines on the track, showcasing their racing prowess and determination.
As the championship race intensifies, Setshaba Mashigo currently leads the GR Cup standings with an impressive 59 points. His commanding lead of 23 points over second-placed Mark Jones reflects his consistency and remarkable performance throughout the season.
Jones, in turn, holds a mere four-point advantage over Denis Droppa in third place, setting the stage for a fierce battle among the top contenders. With Chad Luckhoff and Brendon Staniforth within striking distance of fourth place, the competition promises to be intense and closely fought.
The weekend’s action will feature two special guests from Toyota SA. Riaan Esterhuysen, a familiar face in the GR Cup, will be joining the line-up, ready to mix it up with the motoring scribes. He will be joined by Andrew Kirby, the President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors, who is making his return to the Cup after last participating in 2022.
The weekend’s excitement will kick off with practice sessions on Friday, followed by Qualifying and two race heats on Saturday.
