Art is a subject that more than warrants praise and commemoration. It is an aspect of humanity that cultivates creativity and diversity for all people. For this reason and more, we celebrate World Art Day every year, with 2022 marking the 10th anniversary of this important day of commemoration.
What is art?
Art is the application of human creative skill and imagination and can be expressed in a variety of ways. Although most commonly visual, it can be received by any one of the human senses. Examples of art are painting, sculpting, architecture, theatre, music and literature.
One of the most magical things about art is that it is a language anyone can use. It knows no racial, cultural or social boundaries. At the same time, it promotes creativity, understanding and growth while also supporting emotional intelligence and helping the creators express complex feelings.
“This World Art Day is a timely reminder that art can unite and connect us even in the most difficult of circumstances.”
Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO
The history of World Art Day
World Art Day was first celebrated in 2012 by a variety of countries, including South Africa, making 2022 the tenth celebration of its kind. The day was declared by the International Association of Art (IAA) in 2012, choosing 15 April in honour of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday.
Da Vinci, born in 1452, was one of the greatest artists of his time. The Italian polymath was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor and architect. Although Da Vinci is probably most famous for his paintings, such as the Mona Lisa.
