With KZN boasting its stunning beaches and the warm waters of the east coast, it’s definitely the place to be this summer! Whether you’re looking for a vibey beach with the freshest restaurants and bars, or a more peaceful family-friendly sandy paradise – KZN has it all!
Zinkwazi Beach
The little resort town of Zinkwazi is the perfect hideaway on the Dolphin Coast. And the beautiful stretch of golden sands is surrounded by indigenous forests with tropical palms.
The beach is perfect for sunbathing and the water is protected by shark nets and lifeguards during the holiday season. There is also a large lagoon which is perfect for kids. And if you’re lucky, it’s also known to be a bit of a haven for wildlife. Beachgoers can also go out on a boat to see the whales and dolphins that often play off the coast.
And when you’re over the sandy beach, there is an abundance of birdlife and eco-trails to explore in the beautiful preserve.
Pennington Beach
The beautiful Pennington Beach can be found about 75km south of Durban. The beach is popular for fun water activities such as snorkelling, surfing and swimming. Lifeguards are also always patrolling the beach on weekends and holiday seasons.
And when beachgoers are done playing in the water, they can explore the lovely town of Pennington, which sits above the beach with the most gorgeous views across the Indian Ocean.
Durban North Beach
Running from the Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach and situated to the North of the harbour is where you’ll find the beloved Durban North Beach. This is where all the hustle and bustle of the city come together and is known as one of the best bodyboarding and surfing spot.
The beach is at the heart of the Durban beachfront and is one of the country’s biggest holiday destinations. With many modern hotels and apartment blocks overlooking the beach, accommodation near the ocean won’t be a problem.
And when you’re not in the mood to get sandy, try hitting some of the great restaurants, bars and cafes or even uShaka Marine World – the world’s fifth-largest aquarium. Nearby there’s also Mini Town and the Suncoast Casino to explore.
KZN’s Umhlanga Beach
Umhlanga is just north of Durban and is located on KZN‘s beautiful Sugar Coast. This buzzing resort boasts golden sand and warm inviting waves. And this epic spot has, with no surprise, become home to a number of luxury hotels and apartments.
Umhlanga beach has two recognizable features. The first is the old red and white lighthouse with a height of 21 metres. And the second is the iconic pier with its whalebone structure.
Both locals and visitors love heading to Umhlanga for the vibrant, upmarket backdrop and the beautiful natural assets. The beach is also known as a great surf spot and divers also love visiting it due to the corals of the Dolphin reef and the Lighthouse reef.
Addington Beach
Addington Beach is in a prime location close to Durban North Beach and right next to uShaka Marine World. It’s generally less busy than its beachy neighbours and with its shallow entry into the warm water, it makes it safe for the whole family.
There are lifeguards that patrol the beach year-round with shark nets providing another layer of safety. The beach is perfect for surfers, snorkelling and even scuba diving.
