JK Rowling is best known as the author of the Harry Potter books. However, the author recently landed in a heated social media debate about an essay she penned on the transgender community.
Author JK Rowling shares her concerns
Right now, some of the actors of the Harry Potter franchise have come out in opposition to the views of JK Rowling after the writer shared her controversial views on transitioning.
Previously, the comments and views made by JK Rowling did not go unnoticed and have stirred a heated media debate which has since dubbed her a TERF.
In the recent essay published by JK Rowling, the author shared her five reasons she is concerned about the culture surrounding the transgender community and natal girls and women alike.
The safety of women, girls, and the transgender community
Thus far, JK Rowling expressed her concern for the safety of natal women and girls. As well as the well-being of transgender who she expressed have found regret in transitioning from a woman to a man and vice versa.
“So I want trans women to be safe. At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth,”
The current motivation behind her essay stems from her previous experience as a teacher and as a victim of sexual assault.
Presently, a survey conducted in 2010 revealed that a small portion of transgender individuals have expressed regret in doing a transition and eventually detransitioned to the gender assigned to them at birth.
Right now, Harry Potter star Ralph Fiennes is currently the only person who has come to the defense of JK Rowling. He shared his thoughts about the author fearing for her life.
“But it’s not some obscene, uber Right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman’.”
