The Dutch telecom regulator is addressing Apple about potential excessive electromagnetic radiation of the iPhone 12. It was previously announced that France is temporarily banning the sale of this type of smartphone because its radiation exceeds European limits. The Dutch National Agency for Digital Infrastructure (RDI) has now announced that it has no doubts about the laboratory research on which the French authorities rely.
“The RDI will now first contact the manufacturer. Because the Netherlands, like France, attaches great importance to the safe use of mobile phones. Mobile devices must comply with European standards,” a spokesperson said.
French ban Iphone sales
The French Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR), which is responsible for telecom in France, investigated the electromagnetic radiation from various telephones. This showed that the body absorbs 5.74 watts of radiation per kilogram of weight from the iPhone 12 if, for example, someone carries the phone in their trouser or vest pocket. The European standard is 4.0 watts per kilogram.
The French regulator demands that Apple temporarily stop sales of the phone and come up with a solution for the excessive radiation. It is not yet clear whether there will also be such a temporary ban in the Netherlands.
Electromagnetic radiation from devices can warm the body and therefore there are limits for exposure to that radiation. There are no indications of other health effects of electromagnetic radiation.
