Every Christmas, our family is spoilt enough to be treated to my mother-in-law’s amazing beef tongue dish. Most years this divine meal is covered in the tastiest homemade mustard sauce I have ever had. So after some arm twisting, she gave me the recipe. And it’s so easy!
Simple Method and Ingredients for Homemade Mustard Sauce
All you need for this delicious homemade mustard sauce is some oil, flour, mustard powder, salt, sugar, and boiling water blended, cooked, and mixed in with some mayonnaise and freshly squeezed lemon juice. I say it takes 20 minutes to make, but it’s a bit faster. All you need to do is do some blending and a bit of stirring on the stove. So it’s a stress-free method. Plus it can be whipped together as a last-minute plan should you need a quick remedy for something.
The quality of the ingredients will affect the final product, so I advise using sea salt, as well as freshly squeezed lemon juice as opposed to a bottled version. Plus, if you want to try it, this homemade mayonnaise makes a delicious substitute for shop-bought mayo.
As a Bake in Sauce
As I mentioned, I normally enjoy this flavourful homemade mustard sauce cooked with beef tongue over Christmas. However, it makes an amazing bake-in sauce for almost any dish. Baking times will vary depending on the meat, but should you wish to try it with our delicious beef tongue recipe all you need to do is:
- Lay your beef tongue slices out in a roasting dish.
- Then pour over about half of the mustard sauce.
- Layer the top with scattered bread crumbs.
- Bake for 30 minutes at 180°c.
