Bredie is a much-loved dish across South Africa. And this simple yet delicious tomato and beef based bredie will keep everyone happy, from cook to diner.
Saves Time and Energy
You really can whip this dish together in no time at all. And the best part about it is that, similar to a curry, the longer your tomato beef bredie sits, the more flavourful it will become. So why not make one large dish and have tomorrow’s meal sorted. To top it off, you can interchange the meat used. So should you want to get a bit experimental, you can have half your casserole dish with beef and the other half with lamb. If you split it up, and only serve the one half on the first day your diners may even think that you made an entire new bredie the next day!
Simple Ingredients
Sometimes we just need something simple. Whether it is because you just don’t feel like processing that many ingredients or because your body is maybe asking for simple flavours. All that is involved in this stew-like dish is about 5 minutes of cooking your red meat of choice in a little white wine, sliced onions and garlic. Then tossing in your potato chunks and tomatoes with a teensy bit of sugar to help regulate the acidity of the tomato. And voila! That is pretty much all the work and ingredients needed. From here, it’s just a case of letting it all settle together and cook for about 90 minutes. Then you can eat as is, or choose to serve it with an extra side such as rice.
