You People officially aired on Netflix this past Friday and the reviews are so far extremely positive. Since the time of release, viewers have been actively talking about the film until today!
Everyone needs a little laugh now and then and within the social climate we live in today, it’s imperative to lighten some of the tension. The film is a refreshing take in contrast to films such as Violent Night and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Just for laughs
If you’re an overall lover of comedy, then for sure, You People is just the film you want to watch when you have time to unwind.
You will particularly find humor in some of the trends happening in present times. Such as the reference to Drake’s album views or subtle instances of miscommunication.
Culturally rich
Apart from making a little jokey joke here and there, the difference between cultures is extensively explored in You People between the two characters Amira and Ezra.
Since the pair are from two culturally different backgrounds, each family battles on how to become a unit with people they know nothing about.
For instance, making comments about a woman of color’s hair or saying something racially insensitive are key themes throughout You People that explores the nuances of understanding and coming together with another culture.
Family dynamics
We all know what it can be like when you bring someone home, your parents didn’t imagine you would bring home. During these times, it can be very hard to accept who the child has chosen as the parents have their own ideas of who they want their child or children to be with.
In You People, the layers of every individual are unpacked and in essence, is a reminder that we are all just people who can function as a unit if we separate the different beliefs and cultures.
Most importantly, the freedom of giving family the choice of who to love shows how crucial it is to allow others to experience happiness even if you don’t understand it.
The film also pokes fun at the nature of calling others You People in different instances of perhaps blaming a certain group for doing a particular thing or separating people.
Romantic relationships
Now, the nature of love is very complex and most of the time, we cannot help or predict who we will fall in love with. You People explores how two individuals simply enjoy one another’s company and essentially grow an emotional bond without considering the exterior factors.
