Will Smith has previously shared his remorse about getting violent at the Oscars earlier this year. In an interview with Trevor Noah, the Emancipation star shared a little insight into what was wrong on that night.
Will Smith gets candid about why he slapped Chris Rock
During his appearance on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah probed the actor about Oscar’s night and shared that things were getting worse following the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock.
In response, Will Smith said, “It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know, is that you know, all of that just bubbled up in that moment. You know, I just that’s not who I wanna be.”
Following his response to the situation, Will Smith added that he always wanted to be ‘superhuman’ and be the one to ‘save the damsel in distress’ putting an emphasis on wanting to protect his wife on that night.
While Trevor Noah admitted that Will Smith made a mistake on that night, he shared that he believes it does not reflect who the Bad Boys actor truly is. At this time, the actor began to tear up as The Daily Show audience cheered him on.
Will shares his thoughts on Emancipation
Among some of the other things the star spoke about was his new movie called Emancipation. While many thought Will Smith would be canceled following his controversial slap in March, movie deals had continued to flood for the actor.
In acknowledging that his actions may have some consequences for his upcoming project, Will Smith expressed that he completely understands if the audience was not ready to see his film Emancipation as a result of his actions.
“I completely understand that, if someone is not ready. I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready,”
However, he expressed that he would hate to see the hard work of his team as a result of his actions.
“The people on this team have done some of the best work of their entire careers, and my deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team. So at this point, that’s what I’m working for. That’s what I’m hoping for.
