On Thursday night, Nicki Minaj stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden for a chat. And it wasn’t long before the pair started talking about the show’s beloved “Carpool Karaoke” segment.
Three years ago, Adele made headlines when she perfectly rapped to Minaj’s Monster and the rapper was over the moon that Adele was a fan of her music.
“That made my day, my year,” Minaj recounted. “I got a thousand phone calls about that one thing.”
And of course, Cordon saw the perfect opportunity to turn the challenge around and asked Minaj if she could do an impression of the beloved UK singer.
The Trinidad rapper readied herself, and without skipping a beat, she dropped right into Adele’s north London accent. “In order to channel Adele, I sort of have to think like a black lady in London, awright.”
According to Minaj, her usual British accent is that of a “posh white lady”. So for her to really get into “Adele” she gets into the character of a lady who “used to sell crack” and was “hustling nickles and dimes in the hood” before she got her big break.
The audience and Cordon loved Minaj’s expression and even praised her for getting Adele‘s hand mannerisms spot on.
