My Cousin Vinny (1992)
My Cousin Vinny is a comedy about two men that are falsely accused of murder. And one of the men calls up his cousin, Vinny (Joe Pesci), to act as his lawyer. But since Vinny just passed the bar exam he’s not nearly as ready for the trial as he should be.
Tomei plays Mona Lisa Vito, Vinny’s girlfriend, and also has a role to help win the case. And between Tomei and Pesci’s comedic chemistry, the film is brilliant. Tomei even received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The Wrestler (2008)
The Wrestler can be classified as a sports drama and follows an ageing wrestler who continues to wrestle for the glory even though his health isn’t the best. The film also stars Mickey Rourke and Evan Rachel Wood.
This film is considered to be one of Tomei’s best dramatic performances and she received several major award nominations. The film was also considered as one of the best films of 2008.
Only You (1994)
Only You is such a fun and romantic comedy with a fantastic cast. It follows Faith, who as a child learned the name of her supposed soulmate. Since her childhood, she has moved on and is now engaged. But just before her wedding, her “soulmate” suddenly calls her and she sets off to Italy in the hopes of finding him.
The great Robert Downey Jr. and Bonnie Hunt definitely make this film even better. And Tomei’s sweet nature pairs brilliantly with Downey Jr.’s smooth-talking persona in the film.
Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007)
Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead follows the story of two brothers who decide to commit a robbery. But instead of it solving their problems, it just creates more and bigger troubles. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Albert Finney.
Tomei’s plays Gina Hanson who is the wife of Hoffman’s character and the lover of Hawke’s character. This crime drama is very character-driven and definitely showcases Tomei’s strong acting abilities.
Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Crazy, Stupid, Love is another classic romantic comedy that can be rewatched again and again. It follows Cal (Steve Carell), a recently separated man trying to “get back out there”. And in the process of mentoring Cal, Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a super ladies man, falls in love with Hannah (Emma Stone).
Tomei plays Kate, Cal’s son’s teacher, and her character is involved with some of the funniest moments of the film.
