South Africans all over are proud as DJ Black Coffee just one his first Grammy Award after being nominated for the Best Dance/Electronic Album.
The win was for his seventh studio album, Subconsciously. And this win also represents the first time a South African artist won a Grammy in this category.
He was nominated alongside Major Lazer (Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded)), Marshmello (Shockwave), Sylvan Esso (Free Love), Ten City (Judgement) and Illenium (Fallen Embers).
When his name was called as the winner, Black Coffee was accompanied on stage by his eldest son, Esona – who colour-coordinated his Grammy suit with his father’s white suit.
βI want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world, to heal souls and help people go through whatever they are going through in life. Thank you to my fans around the world for believing in me. I want to thank my family and my children,β Black Coffee said during his acceptance speech.
And finishing off his speech, he turned to his son and said, “this is my firstborn son. I have five more [children] at home. I am coming back with them.”
And during a post-win interview, the South African artist gave a shout out to “the African kids who are watching who come from where I come from who think they don’t have a chance.”
“I wanted to just say to them it’s possible; the award is not just for me; it’s just to show them,” he said.
