The Department of Basic Education has published the 2023 school calendar, which kicks off on 11 January 2023 for learners inland schools, while coastal schools will start a week later on 18 January.
The school year comprises of 199 school days across the four terms, with 132 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.
Teachers and administrators will resume earlier to prepare for the learners before they return to school.
The dates for the school terms are as follows:
Inland schools
- Term 1: 11 January to 24 March
- Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
- Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
- Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
Coastal schools
- Term 1: 18 January to 31 March
- Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
- Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
- Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
Matric results
Those pupils who wrote their matric exams in late 2022 still have over the fortnight to wait to receive their results.
Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced this week that the matric results for the class of 2022 will be announced on 19 January 2023 and distributed by schools and exam centres on 20 January.
The matric class of 2022 will have until 3 February 2023 to apply for a remark or to have their papers rechecked. Learners who wish to rewrite their matric exams and who want to improve their results, the department said they will be granted an opportunity in May/June 2023.
Learners who wish to rewrite will have until 8 February 2023 to register for the May/June 2023 exams- or if they want to register for the October/November exams, the deadline is 15 March 2023, the department said.
