Don Matera has been described by many as a talented creative. As well as a key figure in the apartheid struggle. Sadly, the activist has passed on this past Monday.
Apartheid activist dies at 86
According to Sowetan Live, Don Matera has been laid to rest on Monday night. Which is in line with current Muslim rites. So far, no cause of death has been given for the late poet.
His eldest son, Greg Matera confirmed the news of his father’s passing. The award-winning Journalist had been recovering from a medical check-up a few weeks ago.
To date, Don Matera has mentored many Journalists in the past and is remembered fondly by them. As a key figure in the apartheid struggle, Matera was remembered to read poetry about struggle during the Black Power Movement.
“He comes from the era of protest writing. He used to teach us about how to write book reviews and write poetry. I want him to be remembered through his works that he published.”

Thus far, Don Matera is one of the many struggle activists that has written about apartheid. Not only did he write about oppression, but he also wrote poetry about love.
So far, Don has died on Nelson Mandela Day which commemorates the late president who was a pivotal figure in the apartheid struggle as well as the first black president in 1994.
During the celebration of the late president, South Africans all around were encouraged to do at least 60 minutes of good. That is, to do something that will impact the country and make it a better place as Madiba sought it to be.
Right now, the Don Matera Legacy Foundation will benefit many generations to come as it aims to give all the youth opportunities they deserve.
