After a weekend of heavy rain, the South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a weather warning elevated to level eight for parts of KZN alerting the public to the torrential rainfall expected to continue throughout today, 12 April.
Expected Disruptions
The heavy rainfall experienced over the weekend has already resulted in notable disruptions. Although SAWS advises that KZN can expect further impacts as torrential rain is predicted to continue through to midnight tonight.
Continued widespread flooding of settlements, bridges and any low lying areas is predicted. Along with damage to infrastructure both formal and informal, mud-based houses are at especially high risk.
Additionally, there may be disruptions in traffic as roads may be flooded and difficult driving conditions cause delays. Some major roads may even be closed due to flooding. As well as this there may be widespread prolonged disruption to municipal services and disruption of telecommunications is possible.
SAWS also advises the public to be cautious of widespread mudslides, soil erosion and rockfalls.
Instruction
Residents of KZN are urged to be aware and cautious during the torrential rainfall as it poses a serious threat to the life of both humans and animals. The public is advised to stay indoors and off roads, while owners of animals are urged to protect and relocate them to a safe place on higher ground.
Anyone travelling is warned to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above the ankles. Plus, SAWS warns against going near water-filled potholes as they may contain sinkholes.
