SAA to receive R3.5 billion from government bailout
As part of their bailout deal with the government, SAA is set to receive the next part of its multi-billion rand government bailout. According to the public enterprise’s minister, Pravin Gordhan, the group will be received R3.5 billion in the coming financial year.
Gordhan also assured the public that this was not a new bailout but part of the original R14 billion promised by the government years ago.
SAA is being taken over by equity partner Takatso Consortium with the idea to ultimately remove its dependence on government bailouts. And despite receiving these billions of rands in bailouts, the airline is reportedly still not running profitably.
SAB joins call for not increaseing alcohol taxes
SA Breweries joined the call from the South African liquor industry to not hike alcohol taxes. According to SAB, any increases should be in line with inflation, which would give small businesses some relief after two years of lockdown and alcohol bans.
The National Liquor Traders Association has also called for a 0% increase.
But the South African Alcohol Policy Association, on the other hand, has called for the opposite. They say that Godnowanea should increase taxes so that prices act as a deterrent to alcohol consumption.
Finance minister Enoch Godongwana will deliver his budget speech on Wednesday and reveal what the decision is.
Updated Covid vaccine rules to be implemented in South Africa
A new circular has been made public by the National Department of Health, detailing the adjusted Covid-19 vaccine rules.
From this week on, South Africans won’t have to wait so long to get a booster shot and will also be allowed to mix and match Pfizer and J&J.
