Known for covering a wide variety of music styles, Björk loves integrating electronic and organic sounds. So much so that many people would describe her music as exploring the relationship between nature and technology.
Björk Gudmundsdottir has been active in the music industry since she was 11-years-old, and made her official entrance to the international scene in 1993.
However, the singer-songwriter and actress is far from slowing down. With her last album release in 2017, the singer has confirmed that she is currently working on another album that is fitting for people “making clubs in their living room”.
And whether you love or hate her music, we can all appreciate the creative process. And since Björk has always been true to her unique, quirky and unapologetic ways, here are a few highlights from her music career:
It’s Oh So Quiet (1995)
This song became Björk’s biggest hit in the UK and is what helped her get on the map, internationally.
Hyperballad (1995)
According to critics, Hyperballad is one of Björk’s best-written songs of her career. From ambient electronics to cinematic strings this song covers it all.
Jóga (1997)
This song really demonstrates Björk’s vocal abilities as she tells the story of intense emotions lurking beneath close friendships. Jóga was definitely ahead of its time for the ’90s and people have even compared the midway drop in the song to dubstep.
Who Is It? (2004)
Who Is It? is the lead single from Medulla, her album that was almost entirely based on vocals only. Described as “thrillingly alien and strange“, this song still manages to hit that sweet spot between experimentation and commercialism.
Future Forever (2017)
Future Forever is off of Björk’s newest album, Utopia. She describes this album as “paradise” and fills it with optimistic lyrics:
“Imagine a future and be in it … the past is a loop, turn it off.”
