According to the Department of Health’s latest data, the Covid-19 jabs that were administered on Wednesday were given to 45 828 adults, and 12 959 youngsters.
Considering the latest data, SA is now home to 12 620 892 fully vaccinated adults. This is 31.4% of the 40 million target set by the government.
New Covid-19 cases reported in the country
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) recorded 344 new Covid-19 cases. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in SA to 2 922 735.
The new cases were distributed as follows:
- Gauteng – 140 new cases
- Western Cape – 44 new cases
- KwaZulu-Natal – 41 new cases
- Free State – 35 new cases
- North West – 28 new cases
- Eastern Cape – 22 new cases
The rest of the provinces recorded less than 20 cases each.
“This increase represents a 1.3% positivity rate,” the NICD explained.
Global view of the pandemic
The World Health Organisation (WHO), has recorded a slight upward trend of a 3% increase in new weekly cases between 25 – 31 October.
The European region reported a 6% peak in new weekly cases, whilst other regions registered declines or stable trends.
The biggest drop was reported in the Eastern Mediterranean region (12%), followed by South-East Asian and African regions (both 9%).
Since 31 October, the WHO said there were over 246 million confirmed cases and nearly five million deaths have been reported.
The highest numbers of new cases are as follows:
- The United States with 528 455 new cases (7% increase)
- The United Kingdom with 285 028 new cases (14% decrease)
- Russia with 272 147 new cases (9% increase)
- Turkey with 182 027 new cases (8% decrease)
- Ukraine with 152 897 new cases (14% increase)
In Africa, the highest numbers of new cases are as follows:
- Ethopia with 3 313 new cases (14% increase)
- South Africa with 2 554 new cases (19% decrease)
- Cameroon with 2 210 new cases (17% increase)
