The recent launch of the Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition has many off-road bakkie lovers drooling. The special edition builds on the existing platform of the much-loved Ranger Raptor. Adding exclusive perks to both visual and structural elements, but with no changes to the original Raptor motor and underpinnings.
Ford Special Edition Style
Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa says that the exclusive Raptor Special Edition “adds even more dramatic style to this trend-setting model”.
Available in sea grey, frozen white, performance blue and agate black, the Raptor Special Edition offers exterior and interior updates such as:
- Matte black racing strips edged with red, found on the bonnet, roof, lower body sides, rear wings and tailgate.
- Red front tow hooks
- Matt black wheel arches, bumpers, door handles and Ford-embossed grille.
- Sports seats trimmed in Technical Suede and with red stitching.
- Red stitching for the steering wheel, which also has perforated leather hand grip sections as well as lightweight magnesium paddle shifters.
- Raceway Grey instrument panel
To top all of this off, the special edition also features an integrated sports hoop, procured from the Ranger Wildtrak. As well as a lockable Mountain Top black roller shutter for security.
The Same Great Raptor Features
While the Ford Raptor Special Edition offers some new stylish extras, it does not compromise on performance. You will still find the Ford 157kW/500Nm 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine under the bonnet, controlled by a 10-speed automatic gearbox. And at 2500kg the Special Editions towing capacity matches that of the Raptors.
The Special Edition also kept the FOX Position Sensitive Damping (PSD) shock absorbers, which were exclusively developed for the Raptor model. “They provide higher damping forces at extremes for unparalleled off-road capability, and lower damping forces in more moderate conditions for a smoother ride on-road,” said Ford.
Externally, the Special Edition boasts the same high-strength, low-alloy steel for its reinforced chassis frame found in the original Raptor. As well as 283mm ground clearance, 850mm wading depth and an extra 51mm of height compared to the standard Ranger model. Approach and departure angles are 32.5- and 24-degrees, respectively.
As if this wasn’t enough, compared to the standard Ranger, the Raptor and its special edition have 150mm wider front and rear tracks. With front-wheel travel increased by 32%, and rear travel by 22%.
Price Margin
The Ford Raptor Special Edition is the most expensive model, selling at R965,300, compared to the standard Raptor which is priced at R920,300.
Ford Protect will come with any newly purchased Rangers. This offers a four-year/120 000km warranty, three-year roadside assistance, and five-year corrosion warranty. A six-year or 90 000km service plan is included.
